A Hacker Screenwriting Workshop
Why The First Five Pages?
Lines like "hack the planet," "cattle mutilations are up," and "how about a nice game of chess" are burned into most of our brains, but to get in there they had to go through a lengthy process that all started with a script.

The first five pages of a script are critical for engaging the reader and setting up the rest of the story, and that is where this workshop will focus, in the part of the script where the foundational engineering work takes place, so everything else can work.

In this workshop, we will review samples submitted by attendees who have written screenplays (or at least started them) to get feedback on the first five pages of a screenplay in front of the group.

Even if you don't have a script to be workshopped, you can learn a lot by observing this refinement process.

When and Where
The time and location for this workshop is TBD.

The Workshop Will Include Time To Write
There will be an opportunity to free-write during the workshop (bring your own laptop), and then you can (optionally) volunteer to have your free-writing pages workshopped by the group.

You May Submit Existing Material For Critique
Submissions may be sent in advance to [mailto:hope@screenwritingshit.com hope@screenwritingshit.com] up to an hour before the workshop.

Submission Requirements:
* For security, submissions will be reviewed ONLY AS JPEG IMAGES (search "PDF to JPEG" to find a converter).
* Please name the image files in a <submitter_name>-<screenplay_title>-page_<page_number>.jpg format (like zero_cool-the_day_the_planet_got_hacked-page_1.jpg and so on).
* One submission per attendee
* DO NOT send the entire screenplay, only the first 5 pages(*)

(*) Not including a title page, the title page is Page 0, this is the first 5 pages of action and dialogue specifically, so technically you're sending 6 pages. If a scene goes a few lines over the 5th page, it's okay to include the remaining snippet as an extra page, but only if it's max 10-15 extra lines.

To avoid rehashing the same issues over and over, selections from the submission pool will be made based on the education value to the group, but we will try to get through as many of them as possible in the time allotted.

Cost
There is no additional cost to attend this workshop.

Why isn't this working?
We need three extensions installed/enabled for this to start working:

* Kartographer
Next Steps
After Cargo is installed, the remaining activation sequence will be:

# Save the updated template.
# Create the MapLocations Cargo table from the template’s Cargo action or Special:CargoTables.
# Re-save or purge The New Yorker Hotel so Cargo stores its row.
# Open Local_Map (this page).

Until Cargo is installed, seeing the literal text on Local_Map is expected.

* One submission per attendee

A Hacker Screenwriting Workshop
Why The First Five Pages?
Lines like "hack the planet," "cattle mutilations are up," and "how about a nice game of chess" are burned into most of our brains, but to get in there they had to go through a lengthy process that all started with a script.

The first five pages of a script are critical for engaging the reader and setting up the rest of the story, and that is where this workshop will focus, in the part of the script where the foundational engineering work takes place so everything else can work.

In this workshop, we will review samples submitted by attendees who have written screenplays (or at least started them) to get feedback on the first five pages of a screenplay in front of the group.

Even if you don't have a script to be workshopped, you can learn a lot by observing this refinement process.

The Woorkshop Will Include Time To Write

* One submission per attendee

There is no additional cost to attend this workshop.
The HOPE Scholarship Program is a way that students and others who can't afford HOPE admission can attend for FREE thanks to the generosity of HOPE supporters. Here's how it works:<br>
If you want to donate an admission to HOPE 26, go to our Scholarship page and fill out the form. If you want to apply for a scholarship, just email<br>
Students should send an email message from their school email address (if possible). Mention your current academic status (school, year, and program) and write 50-200 words about why you are interested in attending HOPE 26. Non-students should send an email message briefly describing your situation and what benefits you anticipate from attending HOPE 26.

A Hacker Screenwriting Workshop
Hacking At The First Five Pages

Time To Write
There will be an opportunity to free-write during the workshop (bring your own laptop), and then you can (optionally) volunteer to have your free-writing pages workshopped by the group.

Submit For Critique
Submissions may be sent in advance to [mailto:hope@screenwritingshit.com hope@screenwritingshit.com] up to an hour before the workshop.

Submission Requirements:
* For security, submissions will be reviewed ONLY AS JPEG IMAGES (search "PDF to JPEG" to find a converter).
* Please name the image files in a <submitter_name>-<screenplay_title>-page_<page_number>.jpg format (like zero_cool-the_day_the_planet_got_hacked-page_1.jpg and so on).
* One submission per attendee

There is no additional cost to attend this workshop.

Lexicon: added a link to the music that's playing between talks

1. Where are the Villages?
You can find villages by searching for them in the search box.
Here are some links to help you get started.
Lockpicking Village
RF_Village_Village
RADIO_STATLER_Village
Anarchist_Hackers_Village
Dim_Sum_Labs_Village

1a. Aren't most of the villages supposed to be open all day? How do I access them?
Access to the villages depends on the person in charge of the village. After a BBB session for the village has been started the person in charge will put a link on their village wiki page. (links above) You can also sign up for any of the workshops if they offer them.

2. Where is the transcription?
The transcription links are updated on REAL_TIME_TEXT page (one transcription per talk or keynote). Please note that the wiki for the real time text may not update immediately, so ask for the otter ai link in the Q&A channel if it's not there.

3. I wasn't invited to all the channels or I don't see all the channels in Matrix. How do I fix it?
The HOPE Matrix Bot aka Conference_bot is your friend. Message the bot with your ticket and it will invite you.
Some users have had to log out and log back in or switch browsers to get channels to show back up.

4. Do I have to provide an email address?
Adding your email for registration is optional. If you add an email you are required to verify it before you can log in.

5. I didn't get a confirmation email for a workshop I signed up for.
There is no confirmation sent after you sign up for a workshop. You should receive an email with the room information about an hour before the workshop.

6. I can't get into a workshop why is the limit so low?
Workshops are meant to be more interactive so while the space is virtual the teacher's capacity to help is limited. The person in charge of the workshop set the limit.

7. Will workshops be recorded so I can watch them later?
Most workshops aren't going to be recorded to watch later. That is up to the person giving the workshop. A list of workshops that were recorded will be available later.

8. I missed a talk! Where can I watch the replay?
Don't worry the talks are being archived. You can find them on Archive dot org and on livestream dot com
For livestream you click the Event Posts Link on the right hand side below the go live button.
livestream dot com
And here's a link to the archive dot org page.

9. I bought a ticket and I haven't got my ticket token yet?
It takes a while to process new tokens but you should get your ticket token within 12 hours of your purchase. If you haven't received it by them please email the [helpdesk2020@helpdesk.hope.net helpdesk] and include your order information.

10. Where is the secondary stream or alternative streams?
The LIVESTREAM page has all the details, but you can try and access Room 2 here.

11. Why can't I log in to the matrix server through my phone or another app?
Matrix home server URL for desktop/mobile clients: https://matrix.hope.net

12. My workshop link keeps taking me to the wrong event! How do I make it stop?
If this happens the fastest fix is to close your browser and relaunch. There's some caching happening somewhere and this has proven to be the quickest fix so far.

13. Where can I get the music that's playing between the talks?
The music is by Cameron Glass, and it's available on Bandcamp for free here: http://cameronglass.bandcamp.com/album/hope-2020-soundtrack

topics like the evils of Ring, mobile privacy, the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act, facial recognition, and more. And the traditional
"Ask the EFF" panel is always a favorite with our attendees.

So please join with us and be among the first to support EFF so they'll
be there for all of us in the future. We have a feeling we're going to
be needing them.
Hackers Helping to Fight COVID-19
The unprecedented health threats and global response to the COVID-19 pandemic
have impacted everyone.<br>Many hackers, makers, educators, and others have put
their skills to use by contributing to solutions to a wide range of challenges.

These contributions are the essence of the hacker spirit: People using their
skills, intelligence and energy to help other people. Hackers are helping by
designing, making and distributing much-needed medical supplies. They are
helping by creating communication forums, informative websites, software, and
safe entertainment. They are helping by fighting disinformation, and doing
research and experimentation to investigate solutions and mitigations.

On this page, we have collected links to some of the projects,
products, groups, and activities that highlight how hackers are helping.
