Elior Sterling is the former executive director of Geeks Without Bounds, a small Washington state nonprofit that supports humanitarian open source technology in low resource situations. He's written about infosec for activists for a few organizations including the International Center for Nonviolent Conflict. He has given talks on tech and security at HOPE, BSidesLV, SeaGL, LinuxFest Northwest, the Midwest conference of the National Lawyers Guild, and Amnesty International's Annual General Meeting.
He's been hacking on computers since he was 8 and received 2 Timex-Sinclair 1000s with the 16kb memory expansion pack, one for his mom's house and one for his dad's house. They were very small, and apparently something like $200 that Chanukah season, so his father thought it was a worthy investment. He learned BASIC by copying programs from magazines and books into the machine, and then saving them to cassette tapes using an ordinary tape deck connected to the TS100. His next computer was a Commodore 64, but he also had access to the Toshiba 250 (It had 2 8in floppy drives!!) that his father used for his tax and accounting practice, and he noodled about with both of these whenever he could.
Recently, Elior has been filling his days writing, teaching an assortment of classes online and in person, taking classes, and playing with his grandchildren. He hasn't figured out what he's going to be when he grows up. If you have any good ideas, he's open to suggestions.
